Linda Miller
Candidate for Maine State Senate District 18
“You Speak; I’ll Listen – It’s My Super Power”

Why Linda

Linda was invited by the Democratic Party to run for the Maine Senate in District 18 and is humbled by the opportunity. She sees the challenges the people in her District face, year after year. She wants to be an empathetic representative in Augusta to pursue solutions. Linda wants to understand each community’s issues, what conditions brought about problems and the current resources for solutions. Her small business “Nine Dot Design” is named after a logic puzzle; you must think outside the nine dots to solve the puzzle. Using the same old conventional methods isn’t always the best way to find solutions. Linda plans to use her creativity, analytical strength, commitment & empathy to bring about change and improve Mainer’s quality of life!

Linda's Story

Although Linda’s dad was a good provider, he struggled with mental health issues. This made for a chaotic, abusive childhood and was difficult for Linda to navigate. Reading became a sanctuary. After high school, she skipped college and moved out on her own.

Becoming self-reliant wasn’t easy, but it was empowering. It taught Linda to commit to a challenge, study how things worked and give it her best effort. By creating manageable goals, she mastered many new skills. She went to community college at night and while her children were in school.

Linda’s early years also taught her great empathy for those who struggle with mental health and substance issues. She worked hard to understand and be compassionate with her dad and others who struggled. This empathy opened her eyes to inequalities: racial, religious, ability, age & gender biases, lack of access to affordable housing, health & mental health care.

Linda realizes that the most important need that human beings have, after food & shelter, is validation; to matter to others. In validating those in her life and work, Linda is fully present and laser focused. She listens, asks questions, does the research and creates solutions. She believes, with her whole heart, these skills and commitment will help her excel in representing Mainers in Senate District 18!

About Linda

About

Linda was born in Utah and spent her childhood crisscrossing the U. S. because of her dad’s work assignments. Linda learned to appreciate the beauty and diversity of the land and people of America. She learned not to be afraid of being the new kid!

After graduating high school, she went to work for an aerospace company. Linda worked her way up from file clerk, proofreader, technical editor and eventually became a technical writer. However, the creative side of Linda’s nature was unfulfilled.

Linda raised four children, went to community college and received a certificate in Interior Design. She worked at various design/build firms. She taught herself Computer Aided Design to do space planning. She loved the challenge of designing barrier-free homes and offices. Linda’s work required travel and working in different cities in the U. S. Travel is a wonderful teacher of diversity. Her tech writing experience gave her the research and analytical skills to design projects that stayed on budget, provided functional needs and were healthy places to live or work.

While going to community college, Linda also became involved in her community. She volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, where she physically worked on housing projects & sought building material donations. Linda rallied her community and saved a Works Progress Administration-era school from being torn down. As chairperson for her neighborhood, Linda worked with county government agencies to create projects that improved infrastructure, while promoting affordable housing.

To save money, as a young homeowner, Linda became a do-it-yourselfer. She learned how to frame, install molding, paint, set tile, install finish plumbing and cabinets. With several remodels under her belt, her clients knew her empathy for the process.

With her kids grown, Linda started her own business. She specialized in designing homes, kitchens and baths. During this time, one of Linda’s daughters wanted to visit Maine & asked her to go along. Almost 9 years ago, Linda, her husband & daughter’s family moved to beautiful Maine. After living & traveling all over the U. S., Linda’s heart & soul belong to Maine.

Linda is profoundly honored for the opportunity to represent Senate District 18 in Augusta & work hard overcoming the challenges to the people of Maine.

On the Issues

Healthcare Workforce Shortage

The current healthcare workforce shortage affects so many of us. I know first hand, how it feels to scramble to find a Primary Care provider when your current practice closes. I found that many offices had a 1-3 YEAR waitlist. The more research I've done, the more I realize that the issue is complex. A number of conditions have created this problem: lack of places for medical students to do their internships, shortage of healthcare educators. etc. I will continue to research & find solutions.

Jobs

One of the most important issues Linda will address as Senator is working to attract new industries and businesses to District 18, especially Oxford county. Resources for smaller businesses could include grants from the Maine State Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) with Federal American Rescue Plan Act funds.

Affordable Housing

Although there are some affordable housing options throughout District 18, there just isn’t enough to meet demand. Depending on the employment opportunities present, people in communities need to have access to stand-alone houses, townhomes/condominiums, multi-family, studio, senior rental units, etc. In order for affordable housing to be acceptable to the community homeowners, there should be green space buffers and careful consideration for the existing traffic, roads and utilities. Linda wants to use creative solutions to build more affordable housing stock that supports the needs of people of all ages AND are within a reasonable commute from work. Having lived all over the U.S., Linda has experienced 3 hour round-trip daily commutes. It greatly impacts the quality of life!

Education

While there are fantastic opportunities for high school students to learn a trade, there’s virtually no resources for adults to learn a new skill or trade. Why not use the existing vocational facilities for adult learning in the evening or weekends? Linda is researching this lack of meaningful adult vocational education concept prior to taking office.

Energy Costs and Climate Change

Expensive energy costs & climate-driven storm damages also burden Mainers. In the wake of the Nor'easter we experienced recently, it is very apparent that our power lines, roads and other infrastructure are not going to be resilient enough to weather the future elements. As we begin to experience more & more climate-change driven weather events, Mainers will suffer catastrophic rain, wind and snow that damages/destroys homes, businesses & roads. We need to step up Maine DOT municipal engineering, evaluate the power equipment that CMP & cable providers install in our communities to see if they are built to be value added or are they cheaper fixes that don’t provide communities with any future resiliency.

Senate District 18 includes

Bridgton, Brownfield, Denmark, Fryeburg, Harrison, Hebron, Mechanic Falls, Minot, Norway, Otisfield, Oxford, Paris, Sweden, Waterford.

Maine Education Association

I'm very proud to receive an endorsement from the Maine Education Association. Education enables us to grow and prosper in our communities. Tomorrow's leaders are today's young people. I also believe profoundly that personal growth depends on lifelong learning. Community colleges, colleges & adult education allows us to do that. It's fantastic that MEA endorses legislators in a fair and non-partisan manner.
